Gary Patterson Since taking over the helm of the Horned Frogs in December 2000, Gary Patterson has become synonymous with TCU football.
In 2009, Patterson guided the Horned Frogs to a 12-0 record, No. 3 national ranking and their first BCS appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The 2009 campaign saw the Frogs complete their first perfect regular season since the 1938 National Championship Team. TCU is 12-0 for the first time in history. In recognition of his outstanding leadership on the field, Patterson received the 2009 George Munger Award and the Woody Hayes Award as the nation’s top coach.
The dean of Mountain West Conference coaches, Patterson led TCU to 10 or more wins six times in the last eight years, including five 11-win campaigns. No other coach in TCU history has more than two 10-win campaigns. Patterson’s 85-27 (.759) record is the best mark of the four coaches at TCU to be on the sideline for at least 100 games. Patterson’s 85 wins are second on the Frogs’ career victory list, trailing only Dutch Meyer (109-79-13, .575).
A native of Rozel, Kansas, Gary Patterson is married to the former Kelsey Hayes. He has three sons; Josh, Cade and Blake. In 1984, Patterson accepted the linebacker coaching position at Tennessee Tech while earning a master’s degree in educational administration. Patterson has been part of 14 bowl staffs, including one each with Kansas State, Utah State and the University of New Mexico. The other 11 have come at TCU.
